I checked the Soil Survey Manual and other references but couldn't find info on the L horizon-
what is the definition of L horizons?
There may be a problem using an H designation for fill because NASIS uses the H designation
when it converted the old Soil5 layers which were not labeled with actual horizons, only an
H for horizon. If a master horizon is used for fill the H may be interpreted as the horizon code
but I'm not exactly sure (limited experience with NASIS).
If the fill shows evidence of pedogenesis (I'd have to see it to believe it) then it should be a B horizon
instead of a C- which we use for unweathered geologic parent material. I would still
rather use a Master horizon designation (Fw or Hw) for fill even if there is pedogenesis-any letter will do.
I'm looking at soils from an interpretive point of view as a way to provide information to our users
who may or may not be up on soil taxonomy. I would just like to have a way to show that there is
fill or disturbance in the description using a separate horizon designation. I looked at the Foresthills
description (A and Bw underlain by Ab and Bwb) and didn't really get the info that it is a disturbed soil
until reading the narrative description.
