Without a lot of hand calibration for field texturing, you will need to measure silt content with a hydrometer. Fragment size class is assigned based on the longest axis, 42cm in your example. Our soil survey guidelines limit flagstones to 15-38 cm in length. At 42 cm, your example would be a stone. Fragment shape is used to capture if the stone is flat or nonflat. In your example, you would have a flat stone.by shawn.mcvey - Soil Taxonomy Forum
Clayey-skeletal is a very unusual, but legitimate family classification for Vertisols. There are some old validations from the 1990's in our databases (e.g. NASIS, OSD) that block this combination. It was probably just overlooked as a possibility. I've asked to have those updated to allow for a clayey-skeletal vertisols combination.
