soil classification at the high school level

We received a question from a teacher regarding the classification of soils. Would soil be classified as :
1. compound
2. solution
3. heterogenous mixture.

I know that soil is made up of many different elements, but have been unable to find a ""concrete answer"" Thanks for your time,
