Out of 50 deep organics that I sampled, about half of them fell on that border-line. One observation I noticed is that the pH of an organic horizon would increase substantially near a bottom mineral horizon. Other parameters I was testing was the possible influence of elevation, watershed area, landuse and soil type (dense till/friable till/outwash/shallow soils).
So far I believe that elevation and watershed size do not play a role in the pH of these organics. I am still looking into the other parameters. I have noticed though when taking photos that there there may be a difference in whether the water is stagnant or moving. I am hoping to get out in the field again and sample a deep organic starting near running water
and working my way away. If you have any other ideas or comments please let me know. I am still looking into the 4.5 pH thing.
