Is it possible to have a clayey-skeletal Vertisol? We are trying to use this classification for a residual soil weathered from marble, but one of our databases is producing an error message saying, "Particle size must be FINE, VERY-FINE, CLAYEY, or CLAYEY OVER * for VERTISOLS order" Below is the soil that seems to fit this classification. Attached is a picture. Horizon.....Depthby Andysol - Soil Taxonomy Forum
Fabio, I don't have an answer for you, but I did some reading and found a little information on the subject. There is a Guy Smith publication (1986) called, "The Rationale for Concepts in Soil Taxonomy" that discusses lab vs. field identification of Spodosols. He mentions New York, where they set up chemical requirements to differentiate Spodosols and Inceptisols. They receivby Andysol - Soil Taxonomy Forum
What is the lower boundary for the Kandic diagnostic horizon? The Keys provide a clear definition for the upper boundary, but I can't find anything defining the lower boundary. I've never used Kandics before, so I may have overlooked something. Your partner in the world of dirt, Andysol P.S. Happy Holidays!by Andysol - Soil Taxonomy Forum
Can someone clarify what depth(s) should be used for determining the particle-size class for this soil (see attachment)? The control section for organic soils is made of three tiers and extends from the soil surface to 130 cm. The particle-size class of Terric subgroups of Histosols is determined using the upper 30cm of the mineral layer or of that part of the mineral layer that is within the contby Andysol - Soil Taxonomy Forum

There is the Glossary of Soil Science Terms, which was published by the Soil Science Society of America. They have been printing glossaries on soil terms since 1956, but the most recent copy came out in 2008 and is available on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Glossary+of+Soil+Science+Termsby Andysol - Soil Taxonomy Forum
This topic may apply to other "Pale" great groups, but for simplicity lets focus solely on Palexeralfs. The newest Keys to Soil Taxonomy changed the requirements for Palexeralfs. In short, item JDF 3 on page 79 was changed to clarify position in the profile for criterion on clay content and to add to add a new criterion for the abrupt textural change. In the previous version, it was rby Andysol - Soil Taxonomy Forum
